Upon finding out that a soccer flash had made it into the Weekly Top 5, I knew I had to check it out for myself. As a big fan of the beautiful game, and with a severe lack of soccer related flashes on Newgrounds, I had high hopes, and you did not disappoint.

The story started off on the cheesy side, although, I suppose that was partially intended. However, the flash quickly made a 180 from what seemed to be a campy, sci-fi adventure to a dramatic tale of perseverance. You highlighted this theme wonderfully in the scene where he deletes his text message to his trainer, and defiantly chucks his cell phone off the cliff. The soundtrack that you selected also complemented the theme throughout, and functioned to further bolster the main idea of the story. By the end, I felt that small dose of remorse for the protagonist - a concise testament to a well-told story and an equally well-made flash.

As far as improvements are concerned: my only initial gripe was the graphics. I thought they were nothing beyond average at first, but then I began to realize how well you animated them (especially during the actual soccer game) and how consistent your style was. By the end, I was rather fond of the visuals.

Great work!

Music Catch 2

"Fantastic"

submission: Music Catch 2
date: March 16, 2009

Perhaps the most impressive thing about this game was the correlation between the music and the visuals. I felt as if the piano's harmonies were quite reflective of the spiraling or cascading shapes. The whole thing was rather hypnotizing! The engine ran flawlessly - I was especially relieved to experience no lagging with all of those symbols flying around. Having the "neutral" shapes colored a variety of blues and greens, instead of just a single value, also contributed to the visual razzle-dazzle.

As a fan of both classical music and graphic design, this one was right up my alley. Excellent job!

Obi-Wan's Brilliance

"Nice Man!"

date: January 23, 2009

That was pretty clever. Reminded me a lot of the dialogue in Tankmen (and the stormtroopers even sort of look like them). Yes, the audio was a problem at times, but it didn't distract much from the conversation. Like I said, witty stuff. It's a great scene for a parody and you pulled it off nicely. Really enjoyed the part where they where Obi-Wan drew on the photo with a Sharpie :D!

And it seems you're finally obsessed with flash.

Does Your Mind Wander?

"Awesome"

date: January 21, 2009

Hey man that was great. Full of style and emotion. I wasn't sure what to expect really, but it became quite clear upon seeing Big Ben, DooM, and some medical-ass shit that I was looking into YOUR mind and not just some random fellow's. Innovative stuff. Even though your art style was fairly consistant throughout the flash, each scene was distinct, and strongly portrayed the mood you were going for. I loved all of them. I really did. Coolest flash you've done I believe and a well deserved high score. Keep this going! It has huge sequel potential!

Author's Response:

Thanks so much! And yeah you know me very well so this should all be familiar stuff haha.

I have to say it's a lot of fun to draw whatever you want and not follow a plot. Give it a shot I'd say. Also I'm not really sure how a sequel would work out since its not really a plot thing. I'm definitely going to try drawing my flashes now though thats something I learned to like from this one.

It's funny. I normally hate anime, and I'm typically more fond of action or comedy flashes, but MAN! This really got me (in a non-teary, macho sort of way, of course). Really great stuff - I thought you spent the perfect amount of time building up the story, and at the same time, you didn't give the ending away. It was completely unexpected and completely charming. Great job! [5/5]

I loved this. As you mentioned, it reminded me a lot of Diablo 2 (which is a very good thing). The gameplay was smooth and lively, as with all of your games. The runes and spells diversified the game nicely. The enemies were also unique, and it was a great feeling as I progressed through the game - discovering certain spells that were more effective against specific enemies. The graphics/animation was phenomenal - really, everything from the backgrounds to the character models. Fantastic stuff.

You did a fantastic job on this, Pepijn. Like you mentioned in your comments, you recreated a fairly common scenario - one that many of us can relate to. Your interpretation was touching, and the soundtrack you used really brought the flash to life. To top it off, your animation and graphics (especially the walk cycle) were quite good.

Everything said above helped make this flash more than just some sappy love story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent work!

Loved it. Swain, that was ridiculous. Awesome southern accent and hilarious dialogue! I don't know if this is Shape Day or whatever, but you're on top of it so far.

Alternate Doom: Segment 2

"The best so far"

date: February 12, 2008

Alright man, alright alright. As I said, this is definitely the best so far. It combines the fantastically drawn segments of the Prologue with the intense action of Segment 1. The dialogue was a bit easier to follow as well, and you managed to keep the flow while switching between red team and blue team. Perhaps the most impressive aspect was the camera angles. You hit just about every perspective possible, and as always, the first person's were especially nice. The blood splattering on the lense was also a great little touch, as it added another layer of gore (and therefore, intensity) to the film.

You can really grasp a sense of what the marines are thinking, and a lot of this comes from sources other than the dialogue. As I mentioned, the camera angles were ultra-effective in this area, ESPECIALLY when you zoomed in slowly on the door. Absolutely excellent decision - it was a great way of building suspense, and supplying the viewer with the classic "oh shit ..." feeling. It was also a cool little decision to give a first person perspective of a monster. I couldn't help but smirk when Otto said, "I have some shit to deal with" and then took a shot at the camera (which then bloodied instantly). Very crafty directing.

As far as improvements go, there are a few things. The Archvile sequence didn't seem satisfying enough. I felt you coreographed it correctly, but it didn't have the same intensity of the other scenes. For one, you didn't show the death animation, which disappointed me because it's one of my favorites. I understand it was an explosion, but at the very least, you should've sprayed some meat chunks on the camera. Also, the Archvile's fire sprite looked pretty awful when you stretched it out. I think you should've taken the time to animate the fire from scratch (as messy as that sounds). When the Marine was diving out of the way of the fire, I think it would've been nice to see a couple alpha'd layers behind him (for that ultra slow motion look). For some advice in the next segment, try playing around with those sound effects a bit more. Have certain sounds come from only the left speaker for instance. Combined with those awesome first person perspectives, you could really make it feel like the viewer is the Doom Marine! AW YEA.

Anyway, REALLY nice job on this one, man. Looking forward to 3, and I'm interested to see how Kaden will deal with that big bad cyberdemon.

How 2 Succeed on NG

"Perfect Satire"

date: November 20, 2007

Any flash that makes me laugh out loud will almost always receive a 10 from me. I couldn't get enough of your sarcastic narrartion, as you shed light on some of the hideous truths of Newgrounds. Your arguments were effective, and moreover, your amusing drawings strengthened your points. I had a great laugh when you mentioned "the fucking gay curve," as I always thought it looked more like a violin or guitar than a person's profile. You're correct too of course - a bendy cock and hairy sac would fit perfectly with those facial features.

Excellent job, man. I really enjoyed this one. [5/5]
